In 1989, Leicester City Council built an eco-home in Western Park, promoting the latest in environmentally friendly housing design. Today, we’ve been appointed to a project on the same site, building on its sustainable history to create 20 homes that embrace Passivhaus principles.
The technology of the home built two decades ago is commonplace today – from solar panels to energy efficient lighting and heating. But for its time it was a building of promise. With our development, we will renew this promise – showing once again what sustainable design can achieve.
A Passivhaus development embedded in rich parkland
The location of the site, within the grounds of Leicester’s largest park – Western Park – offers opportunities and challenges for sustainable design.
After being appointed to the project, we’ve developed our approach around giving the site back to the park wherever possible.
We will do this in a range of ways, but in particular using Passivhaus principles – in partnership with our friends at Liv Architects.
A core component of Passivhaus is the orientation of buildings. Our design will give permeability to the site, with layering of the homes allowing for a transition between the public park spaces, semi-public lanes and streets, semi-private front and private garden spaces.
