From the street, this home for a family of four in a South Cambridgeshire village will appear unassuming. But turn the corner and our bold rear extension, once completed, will catch the eye with a dramatic, double-pitched roof, and a mix of ochre red render and natural timber cladding to contrast with the red brick of the home.
The extension opens up the existing ground floor, with a new kitchen, family and dining room. And for a family of cycling enthusiasts and commuters, we’re building our design around every day use, providing practical spaces that make daily moments easier.
A two-storey element to the extension will create a ground floor boot room – a commuters haven – and new master bedroom with en suite. On the ground floor , a rear extension will feature a double-pitched roof, partly vaulted inside, to provide a different scale of space to the original house, with an open plan kitchen, dining and family space that overlooks the garden.
The big emphasis of the project is on sustainability – and energy savings in particular. We’ll explore low carbon technologies and alternatives – like air source heat pumps and solar panels.
Internally, we’ve focused on limiting structural remodelling; being mindful not only of the cost of such works, but also the environmental footprint. Alongside Cambridge Architectural Research we are also looking to minimise the embodied carbon associated with the structural design.
Planning permission was granted in Autumn 2022. We are currently in the technical design stage, working towards a late Spring 2023 start on site.
